The Mass Spectrometry Group of the Portuguese Chemistry Society (SPQ), led by Prof. Maria Helena Florêncio proposes to the International Mass Spectrometry Foundation the organization of the 3rd International Mass Spectrometry School 2017 to be held at Cascais, Portugal, from the 23rd to the 28th July 2017.
The 3rd IMSS aims to provide advanced training in MS to students ranging from PhD level to Post-Doc and starting group leaders, thus raising awareness and competence as MS users and practitioners.
The proposed 3rd IMSS is designed to combine classic lectures and tutorials with mentoring sessions where small groups of students will be able to closely interact with teachers in informal settings, thus breaking barriers. Teaching will be theme focused, based on the perception of scientific importance and future relevance of the selected subjects. Aimed at students from all over the world, the 3rd IMSS will foster Mass Spectrometry networking on a truly global scale.
More than 500 years after Portuguese sailors departed to the most remote places on Earth, reaching India, Brazil, Japan, Newfoundland, Australia and starting the first circumnavigation sailing, it is time to welcome people from around the globe, wishing to learn Mass Spectrometry from experienced teachers that choose to embark with us in this adventure.

The 3rd International Mass Spectrometry School will provide high-level and advanced training in state-of-the-art topics in mass spectrometry and applications to PhD students, post-docs and young group leaders. The school program will include:
Main topics to be covered:
Cascais is served by Lisbon International Airport, located only 20 kilometres (15 miles) away. All major international airlines are represented here. Information can also be obtained on flights, ticket reservations and taxis.
Lisbon International Airport - Telephone: +351-21 841 3700
To reach Cascais from Lisbon airport, you may do so either from public transport or by car, being able to request your rental available through several companies in the market.
Airport - Cais do Sodré - Cascais Without leaving the airport you can reach the Cais do Sodré station by Metro (underground) or “Aero Bus” and from there, take the train to Cascais.
The Airport Metro Station operates from 06:30 to 01:00 a.m. From the airport, take the red line on the Metro to Cais do Sodré station on the green line, changing at Alameda station.
Alternatively, you can take the “Aero Bus”: LINE 1 - CITY CENTER Airport - Cais do Sodré: 7:00 - 23:20 / Cais do Sodré - Airport: 7:40 - 23:00; daily departures every 20 minutes. Direct connection to both airport terminals (Terminal 1 and 2).
Outside of Lisbon Airport there are many Taxis available to take you to Cascais and to the Grande Hotel Real Villa Itália. The Grande Hotel Real Villa Itália is located at Rua Frei Nicolau de Oliveira, 100 (GPS Coordinates: Latitude: 38º41'27.65"N; Longitude: 9º25'24.42"W; tel. +351-210966000). Cascais train station is within a 20 minutes’ walk, but you can take a taxi or a bus.
From Cais do Sodré, there’s a regular train service (CP) directly to Cascais.
The 3rd IMSS will be held at Grande Hotel Real Villa Itália, a 5-star hotel which was the residence of King Humberto II of Italy for 11 years (1950-1961):
